The Positive Place for Kids

Our children are the leaders, parents and professionals of tomorrow. They are also valuable members of our society today with unique perspectives and talents to share. With that knowledge, BGCN takes an integrated approach, offering programs that take into account the whole spectrum of a young person’s life. We hope to instill in our members a sense of personal power that stems from feelings of competence, belonging, usefulness and influence. BGCN is the place where kids can be kids. And it is the place where they learn to become responsible, caring, productive adults.

A Community Pillar

Established in 1938, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark has been serving Newark and the surrounding communities for 72 years as a non-profit, youth development organization. We welcome all nationalities, races and creeds, and each year, over 14,500 children and their families participate in our programs.

Filling a Critical Need for Affordable Programs

BGCN is available and affordable to all youth in our community. We reach out to families who cannot afford or lack access to other programs. Membership dues are low, and no child is turned away because of an inability to pay.

We Are Open Daily

Our friendly, welcoming facilities are critical to our ability to positively influence young people. We run both school-based club sites and a Central Clubhouse (dedicated solely to BGCN). We are open daily after school, on occasional weekends and during the summer.

Positive Mentors and Role Models

Our clubs are led by full-time, trained youth development professionals and are supported by passionate, part-time staff members and volunteers. Everyone on our dedicated staff:

  • believes deeply in our mission
  • is committed to the growth of our kids
  • provides the mentorship necessary to help our kids make appropriate and satisfying choices in their lives

Nationally Recognized Programs

BGCN responds to the needs of young people in Newark, utilizing nationally recognized educational and recreational programs that have proven effective over many years. Our programs encourage positive interaction with adults, peers and family members alike and are designed to empower youth to excel in current and future endeavors. Our diverse programs:

  • offer anti-drug and anti-alcohol messages
  • nurture interests in the arts and sports
  • emphasize ways to stay healthy
