A Star is Born!

Last week’s search of a co-emcee for BGCN’s Annual Evening of the Stars ended when Ms. Tytiana Belton of Newton Street School was selected! The runner up, Ms. Aishat Jimoh of Cleveland School was selected as the understudy. Both young ladies will be working extra hard this week to memorize their lines and make this event a success. Congratulations Tytiana and Aishat! HIP HIP HOORAY!

Cleveland Celebrates Students of the Month!

On March 10, 2011 BGCN recognized our February Students of the Month at Cleveland School. The afternoon was filled with hot pizza, music, and fun! Each student received a Student of the Month Certificate, a ticket to the prize box, and some great pizza. We had a blast! A HUGE congrats once again to our students of the month, keep up the good work!

Cleveland School Fights Illiteracy

Cleveland School BGCN/NJA3 Site Director, Jennifer Mine, fights childhood illiteracy with a book fair! Children scrambled to the tables yearning for a good read. Books were divided up by grade level in an effort to have every genre for every child. Among the plethora of invaluable books were Harry Potter, Clifford, Harry The Dirty Dog, Junie B. Jones, Charlotte’s Web, among 500 others. Cookies and 2 books each make for ecstatic children!

Making World-Wide History at BGCN!

On March 22, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. EST., Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the country will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most people simultaneously performing star jumps (jumping jacks) for two consecutive minutes! Members are practicing their jumps in an effort to work up their stamina.

Preparing for this World Record is also teaching the members that fitness can be fun, and that anyone has the potential to be healthy and athletic!

Lights, Camera, Action!

Students at our NJ After 3 funded school sites including Burnet Street School, Cleveland School and Newton Street School are enjoying the essence of acting! We have been practicing with terminology, staging props, and public speaking skills in an effort to expand our horizons and continue to be bright, shining stars! We love working together to make group skits and we enjoy our time together “thinking outside of the box.”

Remember to be on que, look forward and smile always!

Science Day at Cleveland School!

On Thursday February 24, 2011 Chemist and Newark native Ms. Majeedah Shariah visited our kindergarten class for Science Day! With a block of dry ice and latex balloons in tow Ms. Shariah was ready for some experimenting, and so were our eager kindergarten members!
